Possibly the best known fragrance in the world of aromatherapy, lavender has been used for relaxation for centuries. People who know nothing else about lavender know one its best qualities is the ability to relieve stress and tension as an aid in relaxation. Perhaps your first memory of lavender was the fragrance your grandmother added to her wash to make her linens smell sweet and fresh. But lavender does so much more. This month we want to say a few words about the first-aid qualities of this aromatic herb.

One of the few essential oils that may be applied directly to the skin without dilution in a carrier oil, lavender actually has antiseptic and healing properties. These healing properties of lavender were discovered by a French doctor in the 1920s who seriously burned his hand during a laboratory experiment. As any of us would do, his first thought was to put his hand in something cool.
